Auto Accidents – Are They Really Accidental?

This is a really important question as every ‘accident’ involves damage to one or more vehicles, and possibly injury to drivers and passengers. Each of these ‘accidents’ costs you money because, often, the rate of accidents in your area impacts your auto insurance premium.

Many times I have pondered the use of that word ‘accident’ when applied to the crazy driving that leads to accidents.

Just think for a moment about that articulated truck you saw lying on its side because it flipped over when the driver took the corner too fast. Or that SUV spinning on its roof on a totally straight piece of road. Or the young men in the sports car who ran straight into the back of a truck as they came hurtling over a hill too fast to stop or even take evasive measures.

And what about the guy you catch a glimpse of in your rear-view mirror in the morning weaving through the traffic as if he is playing on a game console. He crosses three lanes without indicating in a crazed effort to get a couple of car spaces ahead. He slides from one lane to another narrowly avoiding clipping the cars he lurches past. Then, a little further down the road, you come across him again. He has pulled on to the hard shoulder; there is visible damage on his car and two others, one of which has spun around and is facing backwards.

Were any of those ‘accidents’? I don’t think so. ‘Crash’ is a more appropriate word but still apportions no blame and little judgment. Instead of an accident or a crash what about a ‘deliberate’? Or perhaps a ‘careless’. Surely someone can produce a good acronym. The best I can manage is a Dangerous Irrational Dastardly Act with a Car (DIDAWAC). I don’t think it will catch on. Can you image telling people you have a broken leg because you were involved in a DIDAWAC on the highway last night? Or you lost your license because of a DIDAWAC? No, probably not, but ‘accident’ is far too conciliatory for some of the stupidity on the roads.

So back to the question; your car is a wreck, you may even have suffered some injuries and the perpetrator seems to be getting off with a misdemeanor. It seems wrong; perhaps we should try to minimize the use of euphemisms like ‘accident’ and admit it was really at least a ‘careless’ if not an actual ‘deliberate’.

As you consider your response, spare a thought for the adequacy of your auto insurance coverage should you find yourself sharing the road with someone demonstrating a propensity to perform a DIDAWAC.
